Amethyst - A131
Amethyst Crystal on Matrix from Veracruz, Mexico
Crystal measures 4 cm in length / 131 grams
Amethyst (SiO2) is a purple variety of quartz. The crystal sits on a matrix that is covered by tiny sparkling quartz crystals. The characteristic purple color is created when trace amounts of iron are irradiated (from the natural radiation in rocks). This museum-quality specimen was mined in Veracruz, Mexico, where this crystal grew in clefts and vugs, sometimes along quartz veins, and not in geodes, as most amethyst from volcanic rocks do.
