Amethyst - A131

Amethyst Crystal on Matrix from Veracruz, Mexico

Crystal measures 4 cm in length / 131 grams

Amethyst (SiO2) is a purple variety of quartz. The crystal sits on a matrix that is covered by tiny sparkling quartz crystals. The characteristic purple color is created when trace amounts of iron are irradiated (from the natural radiation in rocks). This museum-quality specimen was mined in Veracruz, Mexico, where this crystal grew in clefts and vugs, sometimes along quartz veins, and not in geodes, as most amethyst from volcanic rocks do. Collected by Cory Cotter, PhD (2016).
