Amethyst - A102

Amethyst Crystal on Matrix from Veracruz, Mexico

Crystal measures 5 cm in length / 102 grams

Amethyst (SiO2) is a purple variety of quartz. The crystals sit on a matrix that is covered by tiny sparkling quartz crystals. The characteristic purple color is created when trace amounts of iron are irradiated (from the natural radiation in rocks). This museum-quality specimen was mined in Veracruz, Mexico, where these crystals grew in clefts and vugs, sometimes along quartz veins, and not in geodes, as most amethyst from volcanic rocks do. Collected by Cory Cotter, PhD (2016).
